Church of the Holy Trinity, Guildwood

In the last verse of this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus prays to his Father, "so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them” (Jn17:26). According to St. Augustine, the great father of the church of the fourth and fifth century, the purpose of religion, coming from the latin word “re-ligare”, is to re-connect or re-unite. Church is the place where we learn to re-
connect to God, to the world, to each other, in love.
In this Sunday’s readings slaves and jailers alike are transformed by this message of freedom and love. Over and over again the witness of scripture is that people were drawn to Christianity because of what believers did, not what they said. To be
entrusted with the message of the gospel is to live as people who know we are loved and therefore are free to love.

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading Jesus assures his disciples that they will not be left alone. The Holy Spirit will be with them to help and guide them in the same way that the Spirit was present with him during his ministry. This Spirit brings the same inner peace and freedom from fear which Jesus showed even at the darkest times – a “peace that the world cannot give.” As we come together this Sunday to worship, let us rejoice that Jesus’ promise is just as real and true for us today as it was for those first disciples long ago.

Love is the hallmark of God, as is beautifully expressed in the words of the Taize hymn, “Ubi Caritas Deus ibi est”, Where Love is, God is there. In this Sunday’s readings Jesus teaches, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn 13:35). So let us accept the psalmist’s invitation (148) to enter into God’s Dance of Love along with all of creation, angels, heaven and earth, sun and moon, mountains and fields, trees and seas, birds and animals, young and old, men and women, and enjoy the Celebration.

This Sunday we give thanks for our Mothers, who gave us the gift of life, and nurtured us into being, and we thank our loving God who nurtures and cares for us all. Aren’t we all looking for people who really care for us, understand us, respect us? All of us who want to deepen spiritually and grow in a life of love, prayer and compassion need a mentor who will help us on this road. Jesus, the Word made flesh, knows how much we all need good, loving, and wise shepherds so that we may grow to a fuller human & spiritual maturity. Not only does Jesus reveal himself as the Good and Wonderful Shepherd, radiant with the Mothering Love of God, but each one of us, as we grow to maturity, is called to be a good shepherd, a servant-leader for others.
